First off I found this review of the Campaign announcement video at the Free Range Film Fest (scroll down a ways).
Some or most of these links may go behind subscription-only walls before long. But anyway, near as I can figure, once the Duluth News-Tribune published this article in their ‘Wave’ section hyping the Mr. Nice Rally Nov. 3rd, someone at the local AP desk summarized the campaign and put it out on the wire, where it was picked up all over the goddamn place.
Here’s the text of the AP story the way most outlets ran it, followed by the outlets:
A Blue Felt Puppet Running For Duluth Mayor
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) ― Duluth residents appear to have another choice in the upcoming mayoral race — that is, if they’re willing to vote for a 30-year-old blue felt puppet.
Mr. Nice, the creation of brothers Jim and Allen Richardson, will hold a campaign rally Saturday at Washington Galleries in Duluth.
The Richardsons, who wrote a commentary book called “Gonzo Science,” say they decided to enter Mr. Nice in the race even though they aren’t thrilled about participating in the arena of “politics as usual.”
The event Saturday will feature a puppet debate along with an art show. And, Jim Richardson said, Mr. Nice will give “the speech of his life.”
The human candidates in Duluth’s mayoral race are City Councilor Don Ness and Charlie Bell, who was the runner-up in the mayor’s race four years ago.

LexisNexis.com has the transcript of our mention on Fox - it’s the same AP wording (scroll down)
KWLM.com in Willmar, MN ran the story with the headline “PUPPET CANDIDATE ON BALLOT IN DULUTH” (he’s a write-in candidate - story in archived news from 11/2/07)
Worthington Daily Globe (couldn’t find story here so no link)
Maybe more later if I feel like it - that’s all the useful links in 7 pages of Google when you type in “puppet mayor duluth.” Phew!
